CAS is now at all 20 theory locations: how your theory exam works

It's done: since Thursday 8 October 2026, all 20 CBR theory locations use CAS, the new system CBR uses to build and run theory exams. More than 50,000 candidates have already taken their theory exam in CAS. So if your theory exam is coming up, you will sit it in CAS, whichever location you go to. The good news first: the content of the exam has not changed. Only the way it starts and the way it looks are different. Here is what your exam day looks like now.

Step 1: check in at the desk

At the desk you get a slip with an exam code (afnamecode). Keep it with you: you need that code to start your exam.

Step 2: pick your own seat

In the exam room you choose any free seat yourself; you are no longer given a fixed place. You enter your code there and start the exam.

Step 3: two practice questions, inside the exam time

You start with two practice questions to get used to the system. They don't count towards your result, but they do run inside the exam time. For the car theory exam that was already the case. So take them calmly, but don't linger.

Step 4: the new screen

The design has changed a little. According to CBR, tests show candidates get used to it quickly. The question types you can meet:

• Drag question: drag numbers to the right spots, for example who goes first, second and third.
• Single drag question: drag a tick to the right place in the picture.
• Fill-in question: type a number with the on-screen keyboard.
• Hotspot question: tap the right answer in the picture.
• Yes/no and multiple-choice questions: answer yes or no, or pick one answer from two or more options.
• Multiple response: more than one answer can be correct.
• Dynamic image question: start the video, then choose the right answer.

Step 5: the taskbar and submitting

• Bookmark: flag a question so you can find it again easily.
• Question drawer: jump quickly between questions.
• Overview: see which questions you have answered, which are still open and which you flagged.
• Submit: when you're done, you hand in the exam. Forgot a question? You get a warning and can still answer it.

Tip from The Bro School

Before your exam, have a quick look at CBR's examples of the new screen (in Dutch), so nothing looks unfamiliar on the day. Use the bookmark for questions you're unsure about, and always check the overview before you submit.
