People who got their B licence (car) in the first half of 2026 spent €3,625 on average. That's according to new figures from the CBR.

Where does the money go?

  • Driving lessons: €2,785. 80% of candidates paid between €54 and €78 per lesson hour.
  • Theory exam: €135. Candidates needed 2.6 attempts on average, at €50.50 each.
  • Practical exam: €530. 2 attempts on average at €143.50, plus extra costs.
  • Other costs: €175. Things like the health declaration, an interim test, passport photos and the application at the municipality.

42.5 driving lessons on average

In the first half of 2026 a candidate needed 42.5 driving lessons on average to pass. The theory exam took 2.6 attempts on average and the practical exam 2.

9.2% more expensive than in 2025

In 2025 a B licence cost €3,320 on average and candidates needed 41 lessons. The CBR says the 9.2% rise is mainly due to higher fuel prices. The region, the type of car and the length of a lesson also play a role.

CBR advice

The CBR advises looking at a driving school's pass rates, not only its price. You can compare them with the driving school finder on the CBR website.

Tip from The Bro School

Every extra exam attempt costs money. If you pass the theory exam on your first try, you already save about €80 compared to the average. Going into the exam well prepared pays off, for your wallet too.
